NEWPORT — The Newport Greynounds pulled away from the Lonoke Jackrabbits for a 34-12 win in 4A-2 Conference play on Friday night.
Lonoke is now 1-4 overall and 0-2 in league action.
The game was scoreless after one quarter. Newport took a 6-0 lead with 9:25 left in the first half.
Lonoke eventually tied the game at 6-6 following a Greyhounds fumble at their own 18. Lonoke's Caleb Bailey then ran 3 yards to the 15. Josh Coleman ran 14 yards to the Newport 1 before Logan Dozier, out of the Wildcat formation, scored on a 1-yard run with 4:03 left in the first half.
Newport reclaimed the lead on a touchdown with 22.4 seconds left. The Greyhounds scored the two-point conversion to lead 14-6 at halftime.
The Jackrabbits had a chance to tie the game in the third quarter but a dropped pass led to a Lonoke punt. Newport then pushed their lead to 20-6 with 2:37 left in the third quarter.
The Jackrabbits then drove deep into Newport territory but turned the ball over on downs after being stopped on fourth-and-one. That led to a 25-yard touchdown pass for the Greyhounds as they pushed their lead to 27-6 with 4:04 left in the game.
Lonoke got back in the scoring column when Savonte Rountree threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Justin Meadows, making the score 27-12. Newport then returned the ensuing onside kick attempt to set the final score at 34-12.
Rountree completed 8 of 26 passes for 203 yards. Coleman led Lonoke with 30 yards rushing on 15 carries.
Meadows caught 4 passes for 128 yards. Ethan Holland averaged 43 yards a punt on 7 attempts.
Trey Bevis led Lonoke with 12 tackles. Chandler Elmore had 11. Caleb Bailey had eight tackles and an interception. Dylan Goforth, Meadows and Jacob Vandiver had five tackles each.
Lonoke will host Southside Batesville for homecoming this Friday. Game time at James B. Abraham Stadium is 7 p.m.
